the postmen
One of the best things about Bali bands is their love of arcane musical genres,
real or imagined. Whether its cow punk, death metal or rockabilly, you'll probably find some variant of it in on the island.
THE POSTMEN call their brand of music "rapcore," a melodic blend of bouncy bass lines interspersed with heavy guitar, rap stylings
and an occasional female interlude. The band formed in 1999 and put out a demo with the killer track Freedom, which made
it on to an Electrohell Compilation but was left off their first album "Live No Violence." That 2002 release marked the beginning
of a series of personnel changes that finally resulted in the band we now see making its mark in 2006.
With the release of "Wake Up," the four members have set out to prove that musical creativity on Bali owes
more to grunge than gamelan. A few re-worked tracks make it on to this solid release and the new vocals add a power to the band
not felt in previous incarnations. The mixture of English and Indonesian lyrics reveals the influences one expects from the most
popular resort island in the world, while the use of female vocals serves to underscore how laid-back a band from Bali should be.
At the same time these guys bring an intensity to the stage that must be seen to be believed. If you can't do that then make sure
you at least turn up their latest release to 11.
