The Milo
The ghost of Ian Curtis looms large over this band from Bandung. The UK features prominently in their music -- and even in the band's email address (coincidence? I think not!) -- but Britpop fails to sum up their sound. Measured doses of Red House Painters, Felt and Sisters of Mercy will soothe those shoegazers in need of their goth and gloom. Haunting backup vocals by Alexandra (Cherry Bombshell) lend to the lush arrangements that have the unique ability to be sad and uplifting at the same time. The band has toured relentlessly since forming in 1996. The five members gained an even bigger following after the 2003 release of "Let Me Begin" and will no doubt attract more fans when they release an anxiously-awaited second, full-length album in 2006. Check out a group that's too independent to join with a big indie label and find out why even in their small world, it's never too late to paint it black.
