Preaching anarchy through hip-hop is not only rare on the international stage but almost unheard of in Indonesia. Yet these boys from Bandung are taking their battle, lyrically and ideologically, to the streets and winning over converts along the way. Combining street-battle verses with political consciousness and punk-rock ethics, the music is rooted in both the avant-garde and long tradition of New York jeep beats. With influences ranging from Marvin Gaye, Public Enemy and the Last Poets to Crass and Neurosis, this angry outfit is at the forefront of a grassroots movement to shake up the system. Whether it was calling for insurrection during the Suharto regime or earning the ire of “zealots from organized religions,” the band lives what it tries to preach. This 2006 release documents the group’s output since coming together in 1995. “The Nekrophone Dayz” contains material from two EPs, various compilations, unreleased tracks and demos, including remastered versions of their classics Semiotika Rajatega and Boombox Monger. Anarcho-hiphop may describe the music but the term still falls short of describing the words, sounds and passion generated over 11 years of grabbing the mics and never letting go.
